Three years of renting in Chiang Mai, and this spring I finally added the years together. A one-bed near Nimman at 15,000 baht a month came to roughly the price of a small studio over two years, and none of it was mine.
Two rules I did not know before looking. Foreigners cannot own land in Thailand, only condominium units, and a building may sell no more than 49% of its area to foreigners - that cap is per building, so in popular blocks it is long gone. And older resale buildings usually have the expensive common-area repairs behind them, but ageing lifts and pumps come out of the owners' sinking fund, so ask what is in that fund before discussing price.
